IMPROVING THE SANITARY CONDITIONS OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN THE RURAL AREAS OF NYANZA AND CENTRAL REGIONS OF KENYA

Overall objective:

To improve the health, sanitary conditions, and safety of children attending public primary schools in the rural areas of Nyanza and Central regions through the creation of an environment that is conducive to their health, education, and rights.

This objective will be achieved through a threefold approach- infrastructural support, health education, and development of teachers’ and children skills

Purpose

The Purpose of the project is

  1. To improve sanitary conditions of children and teachers in primary schools in Central and Nyanza region of Kenya through provision of toilets.
  2. To improve the access to clean water of children and teachers in primary schools in Central and Nyanza through rain water harvesting and increasing the number of water points.
  3. To increase the awareness of teachers, students and parents about health, hygiene, children rights, and the specific needs of girls and boys in 10 primary schools in Central and Nyanza regions
  4. To create as sustainable system of sanitary safety and child protection through formation of school health committees comprising of teachers, parents and children
  5. To initiate behavioral change in health, sanitary safety and children rights in 10 schools in Central and Nyanza regions among teachers and  students

Main Actions

  1. Construction and renovations of toilets in 10 schools in the villages of Kodebara in Nyanza, and Kamirithu, Ndeya, Rironi, Mabrook in Central regions that are adjusted to the need of boys and girls.
  2. Construction of 10 rain water harvesting system in 10 schools located in the villages of Kodebara in Nyanza, and Kamirithu, Ndeya, Rironi, Mabrook in Central regions.
  3. Installation of 50 water points system in 10 schools located in the villages of Kodebara in Nyanza, and Kamirithu, Ndeya, Rironi, Mabrook in Central regions.
  4. Training of members of school health committees on health, hygiene, sanitation in school environments, children rights, the specific needs of girls and boys and mobilizing the community support for sanitary safety.
  5. Creation and implementation of plans of maintaining hygiene and safety in schools by the health committees and the clubs
  6. Creating and distribution of information education and communication materials on health, hygiene, sanitation in schools environments, children rights, and the specific needs of girls and boys that are adjusted to their age and level of education.
  7. Meetings about sanitary safety, health and environmental education that are attended by at children, parents and teachers from primary schools in Central and Nyanza.
  8. Organization of educational campaign about health, hygiene, children rights, and the specific needs of girls and boys for community members.
